ISARIC/WHO Clinical Characterisation Protocol for Severe Emerging Infections in the UK (CCP-UK)
PI: Professor Martin Wiselka
The CRF team have been instrumental in helping quickly set up and run studies when the Covid pandemic hit. This study is sponsored by the World health organisation a standardized generic study for the rapid, coordinated clinical investigation of severe or potentially severe acute infections by pathogens of public health interest.
The CRF team helped provide a coordinated approach across UHLs 3 sites to enrol as many patients who were admitted into hospital with Covid to gather samples and data to find out as much information as possible about the virus. We managed to recruit well over 2000 people into the study.
Information gathered helped gain a great understanding of the nature of the virus, Answer questions on infection rates and social demographic consistencies. It also allowed us to monitor the treatments and the effectiveness against the virus.
As this was a worldwide study the information gathered was used not only by our own government but coordinated with data from around the world.
